In a bid to woo supporters towards actualization of his 2011 presidential ambition, former Head of State and Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, presidential hopeful, Major General Mohammadu Buhari, has embarked on a tour of all the states in the Southern part of the country.
During the tour, Major-Gen. Buhari is expected to commission state offices of the party.
The visit is also aimed at proving to some doubting Nigerians that contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the party is as strong in that part of the nation as it is in the North.
National Publicity Secretary of CPC, Mr. Dennis Aghanya, who revealed this in a statement, said the party was gathering momentum in leaps and bounds in the South.
According to him, “the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, has a very strong political spread in the South, just as it does in the North.
“Very recently, fire brand clerics from the Southern part of the country are the ones now canvassing support for our party and our leader, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, because of the truth and the commitment which is evident in our party’s programmes and manifesto.”
Aghanya stressed further that “we, as a political party, are committed to the cause of impacting positively on the life of Nigerians.
“The deceit by other political parties, especially the PDP, is something that requires urgent attention, if actually we meant well for our society.
“This is why the elites, clergies, community leaders and an average Southerners have whole- heartedly accepted ‘the gospel according to the CPC.
“Our party is moving very swiftly into the Southern part of the country to consolidate our presence, just the way we have done in the North.
“ That is why we are consolidating our alliances with all the political parties that are discussing with us, especially those with strong political base in the South”.
“In the South East, for instance, more prominent politicians are joining our party. For the fear of not being hunted by the governments in power, we will not disclose their identities.
“We now have governorship candidates in Enugu state with over five Senatorial aspirants and over nine House of Representative aspirants. We also have aspirants for the House of Assembly.
“In Anambra State, we have over 50 candidates who have picked expression of interest forms to contest for councillorship positions in the forthcoming local government elections slated for that state.
“Out of the 24 local government areas in the state, we have 19 candidates contesting for the chairmanship position’’.
“About two persons have indicated interest to run for senate under the platform of the CPC, while more decampees from the PDP into our party are discussing with our party hierarchy in the state to allow their followers pick the ticket under our party platform and contest for House of Assembly, House of Representative and the Senate.
“However, for anybody that has the intentions of contesting the forthcoming 2011 general elections under the CPC platform, he must get registered and present himself for primaries when the time comes.
“No one will have automatic ticket .We have also got a governorship candidate in Ebonyi State. He is a serving senator”.
Noting that the party had offices in five states of the South East zone, Aghanya said the party had also recorded tremendous growth in the South-South and South-West geo- political zones.
