NWF scribe praises Nigerian lifters’ to the C’wealth Games

NIGERIAN weightlifters’ exploits at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India have been  hailed by the Secretary General of the Nigeria weightlifting Federation (NWF), Uche Onwumeh

The Nigerian lifters won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals out of the 11gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze amassed by the country in the seven sports disciplines team Nigeria participated in at the Games.

While appraising the performance of the lifters Monday an elated Onwumeh described their performance as excellent. She said the 11-man team did the country and the NWF proud at the Games.

Augustina Nwaokolo won the first gold medal at the Games in the women’s 48kg category, setting a Commonwealth Games record in both the snatch, clean and jerk with a total of 175kg. Azika Azike, who bagged a silver medal in the women’s 53kg category was full of praises to God for the opportunity the Games proved for her to prove her worth in the sport.

Azike said apart from the 9th All Africa Games in Algeria in 2007 where she won three gold medals in her event, the Commonwealth Games was her first major outing.
