Iweze clinches oldies golf tournament

Maria Iweze over the weekend posted 152 nett to emerge the ladies’ best in the oldies golf tournament at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, and also clinched the nearest to the pin crown with a 2.20m effort in the two_day event.

The 19 handicap posted 74 on day one, and scored 78 the second day over 36 holes just as Ursala Wada trailed in the second position with 176 nett.

She also clinched the ladies longest drive crown when she fired 157m. Dorcas Akinkugbe, a 28 handicap finished in the third position after recording 201 nett in the tournament she packaged alongside consortium of sponsors.

With 151 nett, Peter Igho, the director_general of National Lottery Regulatory Commission finished in the second position in the two_day tournament.

The former director_general of the Nigerian Television Authority scored 77 on the first day and recorded 74 on the second day while Richard Usoro settled in the third position after posting 153 nett, and grabbed the longest drive title after firing a distance of 204 metres to achieve the feat.Mohammed Waziri however won the men’s nearest to the pin with a 1.63m drive.

“The turn out was quite encouraging. This is a way of showing the oldies that they are still very relevant in the scheme of things. This veteran tournament was introduced long ago, but was dropped owing to lack of interest and sponsorship. This time around I decided to go round a few individuals and corporate organisations to resuscitate the tournament.

“With the level of response so far, this veteran tournament has come to stay at this IBB International Golf and Country Club”, Dorcas Akinkugbe said afterwards.
