It was a bad day at the office for Nigerian players at the ongoing Lagos Governor’s Cup Tennis tournament as they all saw the exit doors in their respective second round matches in the singles event.
First to kiss goodbye to the tournament was top women’s player. Fatima Abinu, who was blitzed over by top seed, Anna Kucova, who triumphed in straight sets of 6-0, 6-0.
Also exiting the tourney, Abdulmumini Babalola was defeated by South Africa’s Raven Klaasen, who won straight sets of 7-5, 6-2. Another Nigerian, Clifford Enosoregbe also had the bitter taste of defeat as Boy Westerhof of Holland, ended his hopes of reaching the next stage with a thumping 6-3,6-0 straight sets win.
In other matches Israeli Amir Weintraub stopped Candy Idoko in their match that ended 6-2,6-0 while Blessing Samuel was defeated by Melanie Klaffner of Austria 6-1,6-0.
Other results of the second round matches played yesterday saw France’s Rochette laurent beating Ivorian Terence Nugent 7-6(3),6-2, Karan Rastogi of India was defeated by Ruan Roelofse 6-3,6-2, while Tal Eros of Israel walked over his compatriot Gilad Ben Zvi in the Men’s event.
In the ladies’ singles, there was an upset when tournament number five seed, Karolina Kosinka of Poland was sent out by American Gail Brodsky 6-4,6-1.
In other games, Conny Perrin of Sweden beat Anna Brazhnikova 6-1,6-2. Poojashree Venkatesha of India lost to Natalie Piquion of France in two sets of 3-6, 1-6 while Russia’s Nina Bratchikova beat her compatriot Anastasia Mukhametova 6-1,6-4.
