Apugo slams S-East govs on ASUU strike

By Vincent Ujumadu
AWKA—Striking lecturers of Anambra State University yesterday reviewed the on-going strike which has entered the fourth month, and urged the state and 21 local governments to pool resources together for the purpose of setting aside enough funds for smooth running of the university.

Also a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and member, Board of Trustees, BoT, of the party, Prince Benjamin Apugo, has attacked South East governors for allowing their universities to remain closed for upwards of three months.

Rising from a meeting at its Igbariam campus, ASUU set up a committee to work out what it would require for the university to operate smoothly, adding that if government accepted the recommendations of the committee, which is expected to submit its report on Friday, the strike might be called off  next Monday.

The meeting was said to have insisted that there was no separate salary recommendation for the state and federal universities, adding that all universities in Nigeria operate the same standard and should, therefore, be treated equally in terms of remuneration.

But in a swift reaction, Governor Peter Obi called on ASUU members to call off the strike in the interest of students and development of the South East.

Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Communication, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubabukoh, Obi condemned what he called ASUU’s recourse to intimidation.

Umuahia—A chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and member, Board of Trustees, BoT, of the party, Prince Benjamin Apugo, has attacked South East governors for allowing their universities to remain closed for upwards of three months.

Consequently, he charged them to look for money to pay the teachers, so students could go back to school.

According to Apugo, it is shameful that while other states are granting free education to their students, South East states that charge school fees cannot pay their lecturers, thereby subjecting students to untold hardship.

Speaking to journalists yesterday in Umuahia, Apugo called on Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, who is the chairman of South East Governor’s Forum, to ensure that the states resolved the issue quickly and allow students to return to school.

“When others are giving free education, our governors charge school fees and can’t pay teachers. My appeal is for the governors to run round and find this money and pay the teachers so that the students will return to school.

“It is a shame that they allowed the schools to close. I respect Governor Obi , and I will like him to call on his colleagues and quickly return the students back to school because it is a big shame on them,” Apugo said.
