Former Chief of the Naval Staff, and President of West African Amateur Golf Association (WAAGA) Vice Admiral GTA Adekeye (Rtd) says the Royal Valley Golf Resort in Igosun_Offa is one of the best three golf courses in the country.
He said this was the verdict of professional golfers from across West Africa who had used the facility.
Adekeye, speaking on the eve of a 12 – Nation Golf tourney which tees off today at the Royal Valley Golf Resort, Igosun_Offa, Kwara State, said the 18- hole all – green golf course is of international standard in terms of size, design and facilities.
The four_day event will feature Liberia, Sierra_Leone, Senegal, Togo and Benin Republic. Others are Ivory Coast, Guinea, Ghana, Cameroon, Niger, Burkina_Faso and host Nigeria.
Adekeye who is also chairman of the golf resort said work started in the golf course in 2007 “and along the line we have been putting in a lot of things. We’ve had test run and a lot of good golfers have come here to test the place and they all attested to the high standard of the golf course. They believe it competes well with what they have seen in other parts of the country in terms of size, design and facilities. They said it was one of the best three in this country”
The retired naval chief says although this is the first major tournament the Royal Valley was hosting, it was not the first for the association as WAAGA’s first tournament held in Delta State of Nigeria.
He disclosed that there is a plan to establish a golf academy for the training and development of young golfers at the Igosun_Offa resort. “Our ultimate aim” he says, “is to make Royal Valley a full resort. Right now, there is a hotel complex close by, then we’re going to create a royal village resort where people can have some local entertainment.
