Till date, no one can offer any explanation as to why Jubril Abdullahi’s name was missing from the big five that started professional golf in Nigeria.
Jubril, father of late Ali Abdullahi was a fantastic golfer who played as low as handicap two but could not live his dream of becoming a professional golfer due to the unavailability of a sponsor.
Things were very tough for the golfer who combined two jobs so as to train his children. Nine years ago he lost his job and hell was let loose. He could not provide for his family and things took a downwards turn. He took up the job of coaching would be golfers in Zaria Golf Club, a club with few members and has trained many players who today are good golfers.
Jubril encouraged his sons (four) to take up the game of golf and late Ali caught the golf bug earlier than others and like a bolt out of the blues, Ali a former cricketer, turned to golf and made a living out of the sport.
According to Jubril, Ali was responsible for the payment of his elder brother subscription and was the bread winner of his home. Ali has two other brothers who are following his footsteps-Ibrahim and Isiaku are presently caddies at the Zaria Golf club.
“Ali used to pay for his brother, now that he is no more, I am grateful to God that the Captain of Minna Golf Club has promised to take over the bills and help him through Pro school”, he said.
