ENUGU—THE Police in Enugu Monday arrested about 30 persons for allegedly attempting to disrupt the visit of the wife of the President, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan.
Mrs. Jonathan who was in Enugu to flag off her pet project, Change for Women Initiative, canvassed for more opportunity for women in Nigeria to participate actively in the politics of the country.
Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the arrest, said that they were apprehended around the premises of the Enugu State University of science and Technology, ESUT, while attempting to obstruct the convoy of the first lady, who traveled to Enugu by road.
Vanguard learnt that the arrested youths majority of who sustained serious injuries while trying to flee from the police were students of the State unversities in the South East zone, who were protesting the current strike by lecturers of state owned universities in the zone.
Amaraizu said, they would be charged to court after interrogation.
He however, confirmed that only ten persons were arrested and kept at State Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Enugu.
“They want to disrupt the movement of the convoy and our men picked them. We have only ten and not thirty of them as is being reported and they will be charged to court after interrogation,” Amaraizu said.
Mrs Jonathan who was accompanied by wives of Vice President, Senate President, and Deputy Senate President among others stated that women in the country have continued to play leading role, that time had come for the leadership to give 35 percent political opportunity for women.
She said that Women for Change Initiative were not a political party but a platform that could work for the emancipation of women to attain any height in their political dreams.
