AS preparations for the 2011 general elections gather momentum, Gov Sullivan Iheanacho Chime of Enugu state has continued to garner more endorsements from various groups in appreciation of his regime’s good governance profile.
The latest of such support came from Sullivan Support Group (SSG), one of the vibrant political groups in the state which, Thursday, organised an endorsement rally in Chime’s honour at Liberty Centre, Enugu.
The group which is an umbrella body of other solidarity outfits, also used the occasion to commission its campaign secretariat and highlighted as its mission the commitment to “build a lasting democratic culture in Enugu State where accountable leadership and service delivery reign supreme.”
A statement signed by the Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Chuks Ugwoke quoted Governor Chime who was represented by his deputy, Sunday Onyebuchi as saying: “I’m encouraged by the turnout here, the decision (endorsement) and the goodwill that our government has continued to receive from the people and residents of Enugu State.
“My appeal to this group and all other bodies is that we conduct ourselves with decorum and utmost decency as we witnessed today (Thursday). On our part as a government, I make the pledge that we will not relent in our efforts to make Enugu State a better place for all of us.”
The governor who later commissioned the secretariat assured the various groups in support of his candidature that “with your support, I’m quite confident that we’ll triumph because like I’ve always said as a matter of fact, PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) is the only party in this state.”
Also speaking at the occasion, Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Eugene Odoh reiterated that the issue of Chime’s victory was not in contest.
Said he: “The PDP caucus, the enlarged caucus and the stakeholders had already adopted Governor Chime as our sole candidate for the 2011 general elections and I thank the SSG for adding its voice to the common and collective position of our people.”
The member representing Nkanu East and Nkanu West federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Princess Peace Nnaji, described Chime as a “God-sent leader who came to wipe away our tears and to ensure equity and fairness in his governance of the state.”
In his welcome address, the chairman of the Board of Trustees and state co-ordinator of the Sullivan Support Group, Chief Ikeje Asogwa said that the association is dedicated to the re-election of the incumbent governor “so that he can continue with the good works he’s been doing in the State.”
We’re determined to ensure that it is an no-contest should any party muster the feeble courage to field a candidate.”
It will be recalled that several other groups like the Positive Action Forum and other organs of the body had endorsed Chime as their favoured candidate for the next general polls.
