ENUGU—A pressure group rooting for Jonathan Presidency in 2011, Congress for Equality and Change, has said Igbo’s fate of producing a Nigerian president only lay in the hands of God and not in any man, either from the North or South of the country.
The group stated that the Igbo will produce the president of Nigeria at any time Almighty God endorsed it and not by any political grandstander parading as architect of fate.
It cited the cases of former Nigerian presidents, from Olusegun Obasanjo to the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.
The group was reacting to a newspaper publication credited to Chief Edwin Clark that President Goodluck Jonathan could win the 2011 presidential election without Igbo support.
Zonal chairman of the group, Chief Wilfred Okeke, who reacted when some Igbo political leaders paid him a courtesy call at the zonal campaign office in Enugu, charged politicians to always search for the face of God before making statements capable of jeopardising Igbo interest in the Nigerian project.
Okeke said the reason he accepted to be the coordinator of the congress was the aim and objective which preach equality for all.
“As a Christian, much I know about the Igbo is that we are not good in fighting any authority, insubordination or witch hunting.
“Dr. Alex Ekwueme was very loyal to Shagari, Ebitu Ukaiwe was loyal to IBB, Igbo voted for Shagari, Obasanjo and Yar’Adua.
“We always support sitting presidents, especially those that support Igbo interests, so why is it now that we cannot support our brother, President Goodluck Jonathan? Chief Okeke wondered.
