ENUGU—ENUGU State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday night, endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for next year’s presidential polls.
The endorsement was the result of an enlarged caucus of the party which met at the Governor’s Lodge, Enugu, to deliberate on crucial issues affecting the party in the state.
Governor Sullivan Chime set the ball rolling when he solicited the support of the stakeholders for Jonathan’s presidential bid which he is expected to formally declare on Saturday.
A release issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke, quoted Governor Chime as saying: “It has become imperative for me to invite you, as members of one united family, to back Mr. President in the upcoming primaries and the general elections.
“As I speak to you, he is the only person who has told me of his intention to vie for the presidency of our dear country next year. No other person has said that to me. Therefore, there’s every justification for me to plead with you to join in this crusade because we are assured of a better future in it.”
A loud ovation followed, after which the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Eugene Odoh, put it to vote and the caucus members unanimously and overwhelmingly voted in support of backing President Jonathan in the next elections.
The caucus was later to also unequivocally endorse Chime for a second term after numerous tributes were paid for his outstanding achievements by many speakers, including the deputy president of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.
An elated Governor Chime thanked the people for their gesture, saying “to put it mildly, I’m deeply humbled by this unsolicited gesture.
“I came here to solicit for support for my boss (Jonathan) and I’ve got more than I bargained for. Well, I’ve not made any declaration but I’m emboldened by this show of solidarity.”
