THE Department of the State Security Service (SSS) in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital has arrested five suspects in possession of weapons of mass destruction through a careful planning of execution and painstaking operations by the command.
Parading the suspects before newsmen Wednesday at the Command head office along Maiduguriâ€”Jos road, the state Director, Abdullahi Ahmed stated that four of the suspects were arrested within the Maiduguri metropolis on 30th of July this year.Â Â Â They are; Yakubu Sule, Akila Amos, Mono Musa Donga and Daniel Chayi, while one Mallam Emmanuel Istafanus was also arrested on the 13th of this month along the Baga road- Pompomari Bye-pass within the same metropolis.
He said that the four suspects were arrested with 31 AK4 Rifles, a set of desktop computer, knifes, cutlasses, arms and am munitions, one set of uniform of a special marshal, over N4.8 Million cash which the suspects wrapped inÂ bags of fresh cassava and beans pills and a Red unregistered Mercedes Benz,Â among others . While the other suspect was also arrested with 21 AK4 Rifles, general purpose machine gun, assorted number of am munitions, a white Peugeot 505 Saloon car and other weapons.
Ahmed stated that the suspects were believed to have gotten the weapons from the Republic of Chad and were heading to north central part of Nigeria before luck run out of them, pointing out that the aim of setting up the command by the federal government is to ensure adequate security of the country, which he said ,the command will not relent in that direction.
He stated that, very soon the suspects will be charged to the relevant authorities for proper sanctions so as to serve as deterrent to others, even as he urged members of the public to assist the command with any information that will help to fight insecurity in the state which bordered three International neighboring countries of Chad, Niger and Cameroun Republic.
When interviewed, one of the suspects, Yakubu Sule told Crime Alert that he is from Wukari local government area of Taraba state and also a student of sociology in the University of Maiduguri.Â He said that his friend Akila Amos, a Jukun by tribe from Taraba who was an ex_student of remedial studies in the same institution called him that he was in Maiduguri and the he should come and meet him around Giwa Barrracks in Maiduguri, and when he came, he was arrested along side with the other three suspects.
He said that, even though he didnâ€™t know the other suspect, Daniel Chayi, who is from Jos, but Mono Musa, he said, is also a student of creative arts in the same university and that they all knew each other when they were in Taraba before gaining admission into the institution.Â Akila Amos, he continued,Â had academic problem and was later withdrawn from the university.
Daniel Chayi,Â one of the four suspects from Jos South Local Government area when interviewed also told Crime Alert that, he did not know the three suspects, but it was his friend in Jos, Mallam Joro that linked him with the suspects on 26th of July to lift him to Maiduguri. Asked the purpose of his coming to Maiduguri, Daniel said he just decided to come to Maiduguri, as he has been hearing about it but never paid a visit to the town before he was arrested.
The other suspect, Mallam Emmanuel Istafanus said that, he is from Taraba state and also a driver whom Mallam Jostiya from Wukari, Taraba state hired on the 13th of this month to convey the weapons to Taraba before he was arrested along the Baga_ Road_ Pompomari bye â€“pass within Maiduguri metropolis.
