The much awaited National Sports Festival billed for Port Harcourt, Rivers State in November this year, has been postponed to February, 2011.
According to Brigadier General Emmanuel Okaro (rtd) a member of the LOC for the games, after serious deliberation in Port Harcourt, last Week, It was resolved that the festival be postponed so as to enable Rivers State government more time to put all the facilities in place.
“With what is on groung now, only few facilities will be ready in November this year and Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has prevailed on the LOC to postpone the festival as a result of the state’s inability to put all the facilities that would host the games in placeâ€, Gen. Okaro said.
Gen. Okaro disclosed that facilities like the Basketball court and some other facilities would have been ready before November but the major issue is the mainbowl, which can not ready in November this year.
The mainbowl will host both the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival and it would not be proper to hold the event without the completion of the mainbowl.
Governor Amaechi, it was gathered said he wanted the festival to be held with morden facilities and as such appealed that the festival be moved to February next year. The new date for the festival is now February 24th to March 6th, 2011.
