Bayelsa gov’s aide, 4 others escape death

Five persons, among them the Chief of Protocol to Bayelsa State governor, Tienama Oburiki, and Chairman of Yenagoa Local Government Council, Michael Obolosigha, Thursday escaped death by the whiskers when the boat in which they were travelling exploded and caught fire.

The near tragic incident occurred at about 4pm some distance away from the Government House jetty along Yenagoa waterways.

The occupants of the boat were travelling to Southern Ijaw council for a ceremony.
Though the immediate cause of explosion could not be ascertained but sources told Saturday Vanguard that it might have been due to electrical fault in one of the boat engines.

The ill-fated boat, it was learnt is owned by a youth leader and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yenagoa council area.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that the chairman of Yenagoa local government area, Michael Ogbolosigha sustained serious cut on his head and was rushed to the Government House Clinic.

He was said to have sustained the cut in his desperate speed to catch up with the other boats in the convoy of the Deputy Governor, Werinipre Seibarugu to Oporomo community of Southern Ijaw Local Government area.

The sudden explosion was blamed on excess speed coupled with the alleged poor state of the engine.

The ball of flame was said to have engulfed the cabin of the boat and caught the clothing of  Mr. Godwin Sidi and others trapped in the sinking boat.

Godwin Sidi was reported to have dived into the water to save himself from being roasted alive while Anthony Samuel also took a dive into the river and swam to safety.

It was learnt that while the Yenagoa Council boss, Michael Ogbolosigha was said to have hit his head on the glass in one of the windows in the boat and sustained  injury, a boy who tried to join the rescue team of boat drivers was injured by the boat propeller.

The ill-fated cabin boat was reportedly abandoned some distance away from the Government jetty with the embattled passengers thanking God for their miraculous escape.
