KANO—No fewer than 10 persons sustained injury last night in Gwarmai Village, Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, following an inferno from vandalised Pipelines Products Marketing Company, PPMC, pipelines.
The incident, set off by unknown vandals, occurred around sunset when Muslim faithful were set to break their Ramadan fast.
An eyewitness told Vanguard that villagers rushed to the scene to scoop fuel armed with bucket and containers of various sizes when in the ensuing melee fire broke out.
The eyewitness also confided in Vanguard that he saw a truck with a hose connected to the leakage point, adding that the truck was driven away when confusion set in.
Village head’s SOS
Vanguard learnt that the village Head of the Gwarmai, Malam Muhammadu Adam, reported the matter to Police who promptly deployed officers to contain the situation.
Although no life was lost, those injured shied away from hospitals to avoid arrest by the Police. Officials of PPMC succeeded in fixing the broken pipe last night.
Keeping mum
Officials of PPMC in Kano are keeping sealed lips over the incident as efforts by Vanguard to confirm the incident regarding claims of injury proved unsuccessful.
Also, Police image maker in Kano, SP Baba Muhammad Azare, while confirming the incident, denied knowledge of any injury.
Azare explained that the Police was alerted by the District Head that saw them swing into action, stressing no arrest has been made so far.
He disclosed that the Police was investigating the incident with the view of bringing the perpetrators to book.
