Gov. Peter Obi says it is crime and mortal sin for those in authority to owe pensioners.  Handing cheques of N250 million to local government pensioners in the state at Awka, the governor aplogised to pensioners in Anambra State for the shabby way they had been treated in the past.
Obi said his government would continue to pay pensioners first before any other category of workers or contractors. He insisted that the society is duty-bound to take care of those that contributed to its building especially in their old ages when they have fewer opportunities.
Obi, who promised that other category of pensioners are receiving attention, said that his government had equally paid N1.7bn owed state pensioners and that he is currently paying the arrears remitted by the Federal Government that were not accounted for.
Earlier, the state commissioner for local government and chieftaincy matters, Mr. Dubem Obaze, in his remarks, said that the government of Obi had, since inception in 2006, paid over N7.4bn in arrears of pension owed to local government retirees since 1996. He said that the amount did not include the arrears owed other category of pensioners in the state.
