UGHELLI—THE forum of registered political parties in Delta State, has called for the cancellation of grants to political parties, stressing the need for political parties to source for funds to carry out their activities.
The forum in a statement by its chairman, Prince Obaro Unuafe, urged government to provide a level playing ground for parties to test their strength in elections, adding that grants given to political parties in the past had not yielded the desired results.
According to the statement, “the grants were being abused by some parties and fraudulent government officials,” insisting that democracy in the country could only be developed and compete favourably with advanced democracies in the world, if government provides a level playing ground for all political parties in the country.
Calling for a veritable and healthy competition among candidates in the spirit of sportsmanship, it said, “this will create a rich political space and discourage endorsement, which today has become anachronistic, anti-development and a reminder of the sad political past.
“The forum wish to state at this period of our political history and at a time when the Indenpendent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is being repositioned to conduct a free and fair elections under a ‘one man one vote’ slogan, that the claims by some government officials are vexatious, ill timed and nebulou,†it added.
