ABUJA-AFTER several hours of international diplomacy and high level politics between Nigeria and the world football governing body, FIFA, the Nigerian government today rescinded its earlier decision withdrawing from FIFA events.
But this did not come without both parties reaching a compromise, just as FIFA, the Federation of International Football Associations, accepted both the impeachment of top officials of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and every decision to reform the ailing Glass House.
A source close to President Goodluck Jonathan told Vanguard that the President expressed joy that Nigeria was able to effect the necessary changes in the nation’s football industry, especially the removal of the NFF leadership.
According to our source, FIFA was able to accept the changes because Nigeria decided to take a harder position of outright withdrawal from all FIFA events, “hence in our negotiations we came down to what we actually wanted; so the President is happy”.
More details later.
