As the 2011 general elections draw near, the Oyo State chapter of the Action Congress, AC, has disagreed with the National Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Athairu Jega, that the old voters’ register would be used in the election.

Relying on Iwu’s voters register, the party argued, had already spelt doom for the election as it maintained that no credible election could be held with the existing voters’ register.

The party  warned through its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Mr. Wasiu Adewale Olatubosun,  that  people had resolved  to resist any attempt from any quarter to foist on them “irresponsible and unresponsive government.”

“We feel it is pertinent to warn Prof Jega not to allow himself to be used to legitimatize  illegality which will be a disservice to the country and as well dent his stainless white apparel. It would also interest him to know that if current voters’ register is used for next year’s election, it could be likened to a house built on sifting sand. Therefore the idea is bogus and without proficient indices which should be dropped forthwith.”

Blasts Akala over comment

On the comments of Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala over allegation against him by the former Governor of the state, Alhaji Lam Adesina, the party stated that one did not need to be a student of history to remember what happened in December, 2003, when the former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Chief Bola Ige was murdered few months to the 2003 general elections.

“It would also interest Governor Akala to know that the democracy he is now a beneficiary was as a result of doggedness of some people like Lam who fought military to earn the title of ‘prisoner of war’, and he has not reneged for once in fighting for the oppressed,” AC said.

Faulting  a statement by the governor that the former Governor used the name of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo to win election, AC recalled that everybody knew  how “Governor Akala in connivance with the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo got to power through betrayal of his boss, Alhaji Rasheed Ladoja.”

“Unlike a pariah government which is the hallmark of Akala’s administration where few charlatans hold sway, Alhaji Adesina ran a participatory government and has not betrayed his leaders for once, as he still remains a principled, an exemplary statesman.

One does not need a soothsayer to know that the state is heading towards a failed state occasioned by high level tolerance for corruption and insensitivity to the plight of people who are wallowing in abject poverty and intolerable level of unemployment despite huge revenue accrued to it for the past three years, when  Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala seized the governance of the state by the jugular.”
