As Kanu begs support against Argentina
Coach Lars Lagerback says the Super Eagles showed in their game against North Korea that they can do without Mikel Obi.
Lagerback, in his appraisal after the friendly match in Pretoria Sunday night, x_rayed the midfield and the entire game plan that earned him his first victory with the team.
Super Eagles Skipper, Nwankwo Kanu, has also called on Nigerians to give massive support to the team against Argentina.
“Nigerians should support us the way they supported us before and we will not disappoint them,†Kanu said
Lagerbacksaid “They’ve shown they can play without Mikel, so hopefully we will do even better when we come to the World Cup,â€.
Lagerback said it was unfortunate that the playmaker was injured and out of the World Cup.
He, however, said the crop of players in the midfield had proved their mettle.
Mikel was dropped from the 23_man squad on June 4 after he failed to recuperate fully from an injury.
He was replaced by Brown Ideye who came in on Sunday and watched the match from the sidelines.
Lagerback said in spite of the slip which made Nigeria to concede a goal, the defence line was impressive.
“The Korean goal was a mistake. Sometimes you do a mistake but that does not mean you complain about the whole defence,â€
“The defence in general was quite right. I think the defence has been good today,†.
“I think it’s a step further in our preparation,†he said of the match, stressing that was important to win a game.
“We won the game, so that’s positive though there were some areas that were good and some were not so good,†he said.
Lagerback said Ideye will now join the team in training.
“For Argentina, we will do our best. If we do that, we have a good chance,†he said of the team’s World Cup opener on June 12.
Osaze Odemwengie said that the result of the match was exciting.
“I’m very happy with the result.
“With the same people, the same attitude and very organised, hopefully that will bring the three points against Argentina,†he said.
Give us massive support against Argentina, Kanu tells Nigerians
Super Eagles Skipper, Nwankwo Kanu, has called on Nigerians to give massive support to the team against Argentina.
“Nigerians should support us the way they supported us today and we will not disappoint them,†Kanu said in Pretoria on Sunday.
“I thank Nigerians for supporting and praying for us,†he said, noting that massive support is always a good tonic for victory.
Kanu urged the teeming fans to be law abiding as they show their support for the team in the tournament.
The skipper during the match had to step into the stands to appeal to the fans to be orderly when the Match Commissioner stopped the game temporarily.
“The game was stopped when they were too close and they wanted them to shift back.
“We had to ask them to shift back and when they did, we continued the match,†he said.
The Nigerians trooped to the venue of the match in their numbers with many unable to gain access into the facility.
Nigeria will return to Johannesburg on June 12 to begin its World Cup campaign against Argentina
