Former Eagles defender and Heartland coach, Kelechi Emeteole said that the short period of preparations by the Eagles for the 2010 World Cup, should be a major source of worry for Nigerians fans.
Emetole reasoned that unless the players rise up to the occasion with their individual abilities, there wouldn’t be much for Nigerians to celebrate.
“My only hope is that when the World Cup proper starts the players will do their best.
“My fear is that we have not prepared well. There were no quality friendly matches, it is just like we are sending our old soldiers to go and battle with other well motivated and better equipped soldiers.
“It will now boil down to individual ability to lift the team. Let us wait and see what will happen,â€said Emeteole who led Heartland to the final of the CAF Champions League last year.
He added that Nigerian fans should support the choice of players coach Lagerback made for the World Cup, even though younger players like Peter Utaka and Victor Anichebe deserved a place following their performances for their various clubs this season.
“The coach is right there on the spot. He knows where the shoe pinches and so let us give him a free hand and the chance to do what is best for the team,â€Emetiole added.
