Gov. Jonah Jang on Tuesday launched sale of fertilizers in Plateau, pegging the price at N2,000 per bag.The commodity sells for between N5,500 and N6,000 in the open market.
The Governor, who launched the sales at Kassa in the Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area of the state, said that government was subsidizing the cost of the commodity by 65 per cent per bag.
Jang explained that the gesture was to enable farmers to increase their cultivation and produce more food for the citizenry and make raw materials for agro-allied industries. He said: “If we abandon agriculture in preference for other sectors, we will be doing that at our own risk.
“Before the discovery of oil and other mineral resources, Nigeria was reaping bountifully from agricultural exports that formed the mainstay of the national economy.
“The youths and retired civil servants should now embrace agriculture because the dignity of labour is being restored.â€
The Governor said that agriculture was taking a centre stage in the nation’s economy in view of the recent downturn in the oil sub-sector.
He said that the global food crisis underscored the need for every government and the people to take agriculture seriously to achieve food sufficiency and security.
