Former Super Eagles defender, Uche Okafor has welcomed the withdrawal of all national teams from international football competitions in the next two years.
Reacting to President Goodluck Jonathan’s suspension of Nigeria from all FIFA-related competitions, Okafor, who was a member of the Super Eagles squad that played for the very first time in the 1994 World Cup in the United State of America, Okafor said that suspension would make no meaning if the nation failed to get the right people to administer the game at the end of the two-years time-line.
“I welcome the move to withdraw our national teams from international football because we have just been going to those competitions for the sake of participation and not development of the game.
“ Government has taken the first step in the right direction. But that is just the start of the process because the major thing is to get the right people to run our football.
“The same problems we are facing today, will remain if we do not get intelligent football persons to run our game. People who have jobs and can offer something worthwhile are the ones we need for our football to thrive.|
“We should also not forget that the Super Eagles are not the only national team that we must concentrate our efforts on. We must focus on all national teams because they work hand in hand. Our development must be comprehensive.
We need people like Sani Toro, Pinnick Amaju to be running the game and get the right coaches to deliver results that would stand the test of timeâ€, added Okafor.
