Enugu —The National Environmental Standards Regulations and Enforcement Agency, NESREA, yesterday, sued MTN at a Federal High Court in Enugu for alleged environmental violation.
NESREA alleged in the suit that MTN violated its act by situating one of its equipment at Emene, a suburb of Enugu.
It further alleged that the equipment used by MTN also leaked oil which seeped into the soil and polluted drinking water in the community.
However, after hours of waiting, the suit was adjourned till 22 June for hearing due to the ill-health of the presiding Judge, Justice Dan Abutu.
Counsel to MTN, Dr. Anthony Mogbana, said the judge sat in chambers with counsel and adjourned the matter.
According to him, apart from being new to the matter, the judge also pleaded ill-health.
Counsel to NESREA, Mr. Bola Odugbesan, said his client decided to take MTN to court because the company situated its equipment at Emene in violation of the Environmental Act.
According to Odugbesan, the alleged action by MTN undermines the environmental policy of the country as well as violates the national environmental waste and sanitation regulation laws.
