STAKEHOLDERS in the Niger Delta region have been enjoined to rally round the new Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to enable it make meaningful impact in the region.
Speaking against the backdrop of a recent case against the Managing Director of the Commission before a Federal High Court, Abuja, Concerned Youth Leaders of Kalabari, yesterday called for the withdrawal of the suit, noting that it was necessary for all hands to be on deck to make the Commission succeed.
The group in a statement after its emergency meeting in Port Harcourt, said the suit was capable of distracting the new board of the Commission from performing. It enjoined those sponsoring disaffections against the new board to desist from doing so, as their energies should be geared towards addressing challenges of underdevelopment and poverty in the region.
“We are advising Onengiye Elekima to withdraw the suit. It is an unnecessary distraction. The Commission should be allowed to concentrate on how to tackle development challenges in the regionâ€, the group said.
It appealed for release of funds owed the Commission, pleading with President Goodluck Jonathan to revisit the fund due the Commission that the late President Musa Yar Adua said had expired and see how it could be released.
The group also tasked the new Board of the Commission to ensure they set standards in terms of development of the region.
