TheÂ Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed has inaugurated a 13_man committee to organise the 2010 edition of Abuja Carnival.
Inaugurating the committee which has the minister as chairman, Alhaji Sadiq said, it is imperative for the committee to ensure that they package a world class carnival for 2010 to celebrate Nigeriaâ€™s 50th anniversary.
Alhaji Sadiq said â€œAbuja Carnival, as we are all aware, is the ministryâ€™s flagship programme initiated in 2005 for the purpose of promoting cultural tourismâ€ and stressed that the carnival would serve as a platform to promote the rich heritage of Nigeria arts and culture.
The minister noted that Abuja is not only the seat of government, but the heart of Nigeriaâ€™s unity and a destination showcasing the best of Nigeriaâ€™s cultural patrimony and assured Nigerians that the committee would package the best carnival ever.
According to the Minister, â€œThe Abuja Carnival as we are all aware is the ministryâ€™s flagship programme initiated in 2005 for the purpose of promoting cultural tourism. It serves as a platform to promote the rich heritage of Nigeria and art forms of Nigeria. It highlights Abuja as not only the seat of government but the heart of Nigeriaâ€™s unity and tourism destination showcasing the best of Nigeriaâ€™s cultural patrimony.â€
He noted, â€œIt is noteworthy that five carnivals have been successfully hosted by this Ministry in partnership with the Federal capital Territory since its inception in 2005 and I am glad to equally note that some of you were also members of the committee in 2009.â€
He challenged them to ensure that they package a hitch free and better organized 2010 carnival.
The Minister who is also the Chairman of the committee said, â€œI urge you to give your best contribution to this assignment which is very important not only to the Ministry but to the entire nation.
As the host ministry, we are very much aware of the usual challenges that confront past carnivals and hereby pledged our unflinching support to the committee for effective implementation of 2010 mandate.|
He also urged the committee to ensure that the private sectors in the country are fully involved in the successful hosting of the carnival.
Responding on behalf of the committee members, Professor Ojo Bakare, Artistic Director of the 2010 Abuja Carnival said this yearâ€™s edition will be unique and could score three â€˜Asâ€™.
Members of the committee are; Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed, Honourable Minister of Tourism, Cultural and National Orientation, as chairman, Alhaji S. B Ozigis, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Professor Ojo Bakare, Artistic Director, George Ufot, Director of Culture of the Ministryâ€™sÂ and Representative/Liaison, Alhaji Tukur Mohammed, Manager Finance and Accounts who is also the Director of Finance and Account in the ministry and Ms. Grace Isu Gekpe, Manager Administration,Â an assistance director in the ministry.
Others are, representative of the marketing consultant, Samuel Tunde Bello, representative of the Federal Capital Territory [FCT], Sam Agbi, National Council for Arts and Culture [NCAC], Dotun Osunsanya , National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners [NANTAP], Lucky Onoriode George, Media/Tourism Representative and Ahmed Tijjani Abubakar, Special Assistant to the honourable minister.
