Benue declares war on crime, criminality

It is not in doubt that security of lives and property remains a panacea for sustainable growth and development of any given society.   And it is for this reason that successive governments in Nigeria have devoted huge sums to the funding of the Police and other auxiliary agencies that complement the efforts of the Nigerian Police Force in the protection of lives and property of the people.

This explains the reason why the Benue State Government under the leadership of Governor Gabriel Suswam, few days back demonstrated what the Minister for Police Affairs, Alhaji Adamu Wasiri described as a ‘stunning contribution’ to the renewed war against crime in the state.

The Benue State Government donated to the state command of the Nigeria Police Force, 46 security patrol Hilux vans and 4 Armoured Personnel Carriers APC all fitted with modern communication gadgets valued at over N2 billion.

Governor Suswam on that occasion, which was graced by the Minister for Police Affairs, the Inspector -General of Police, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo and top security Chiefs from across the country, noted that the donation of the vehicles was intended to boost the security of lives and property of the people of the state which, according to him, was of topmost priority to his administration.

Suswam also noted that his administration was moved to embark on the procurement of the vehicles in order to checkmate rising incidents of crime in the state.   The governor said the Nigerian Police Force plays a critical role in the protection of lives and property for the generality of Nigerians hence should be encouraged to discharge that responsibility with all diligence.

He also assured that his administration would continue to support the force in its quest to reposition for greater efficiency and better service delivery noting that a better equipped Police Force ensures greater safety of lives and property of the people.

Suswam opined, “It is not in doubt that perpetrators of crime in the society have introduced sophistication in the act and it is only logical that we take necessary steps to checkmate their activities.”

He intimated that his administration was partnering with the traditional institutions, vigilante groups and other key stakeholders in the state government’s renewed clampdown on crime and all forms of criminality.

The Governor who assured that he would continue to channel the peoples’ resources to meaningful projects stressed that it was the only way a government would be able to impact positively on the lives of the people.

“As a government, we have promised that we would always channel the people’s resources to meaningful projects and we will not in anyway deviate from that.  It has also become imperative that we take proactive action to check the perpetrators of crime in our society through the fortification and empowerment of the Police and it is only by so doing that we can bequest an egalitarian and crime free society to our people”, Suswam added.

He noted that all security agencies in the state, including vigilante groups would benefit from the vehicles but warned that the vehicles must not be used for partisan purposes.

The governor also intimated that his administration had two years ago extended similar gesture to security agencies in the state when a security outfit code named ‘Operation Zenda’ which comprised members of the armed forces and the police was created to boost security operations in the state.

He lauded the accomplishments of the anti crime team which he noted also gave the government the needed impetus to take the war on crime to another level.
