Immediate past Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. Mike Okiro has described late President Musa Yar’Adua as an honest leader, who was “committed to the development of the Niger Delta and did his job without favouring any section of the country.â€
In a statement yesterday, Okiro noted that “previous governments had neglected the Niger Delta, but when he came on board, he took up the challenges and the determination to right the wrongs done to the region.â€
Speaking on the Amnesty, the former IGP recalled that when he made a proposal on Amnesty to militants of the Niger Delta to Yar’Adua, “he was quick and swift to approve my proposal on the Amnesty. That has brought relative peace to the area, increase oil output to Nigeria and enhance development in the Niger Delta.â€
For his commitment to the development of the region, Okiro said “we in the Niger Delta will surely mourn his death because he has brought succour to the area.â€
He observed that Yar’Adua was also committed to the rule of law but that the only impediment was his health and “we know that health and life come from God.â€
While praying God to grant his soul eternal rest, Okiro wishes Nigerians and his family the strength and faith to bear the loss and put their hope and trust in God.
