‘No one dictates to Gov Orji’

By Anayo Okoli
Umuahia — THE Special Adviser to Governor Theodore Orji on Electronic Media, Mr. Ugochukwu Emezue, has said that nobody or group of people can stampede or dictate to the Governor on how he does  his work.

Emezue was reacting to the position of Abia State Labour Party, LP, that Governor Orji has no power to appoint caretaker committees for the 17 local government areas of the state.

“If he (Governor Orji) decides to appoint transition committee, he is backed by law and he will do that when the need arises”, Emezue said, adding that the various managements in the councils were doing well for now and that the Governor would not want to be distracted from his focused engagement of developing the state.

The Labour Party in Abia State has in a letter to Governor Orji, had urged him to ensure good governance and deliver dividends of democracy to the people of the state. The letter also urged the state Attorney_General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ume Kalu to explain to the people the true position of the decision of the Owerri Division of Court of Appeal.

The party chairman in the state, Mr. Bob Ogu,  insisted that the judgment states that the elected council chairmen and their councilors must be re_instated and all their monies paid to avoid being embarrassed by the court.

But Emezue disagrees, saying that the council chairmen and their councilors had served out their term. He explained that the Governor had the power under the law to appoint caretaker committees if he so desires, but noted that the Heads of Service that are currently in charge, are doing well and are paying the salary arrears being owed council workers.

The Labour Party had challenged the Governor for appointing caretaker committees, saying that he has no power under the law to appoint them, “and if he goes ahead to do that, our party will serve him form 48 and 49 and if he goes ahead,  move for committal will follow and immunity clause will not help him in this case”.

Ogu called for time table for the election in to the 17 local government areas of the state and that the party will not accept anything to the contrary.
