THE Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, have thrown their weight behind the Employees’ Compensation Bill which is at the final stage of being passed by the Senate.
Representatives of the unions who spoke at the public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Labour and Productivity on the bill, at the weekend, said the bill will not compete with the Pension Reform Act but will protect the interest of the workers.
NLC Vice-President, Mr. Issa Aremu, in his contribution at the session, noted that if the bill were in place, those who died in the 2001 factory fire at Ikorodu would have been compensated.
“It is about life at work . The Ikorodu fire in which about 30 workers died, there is no compensation till today. It would have been better if we had the Employees’ Compensation Bill.”
