NEMA to tackle food crisis

THE National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in a consultative meeting with major stakeholders in Emergency and Disaster Risk Reduction set to find a way out of the potential food crisis about to hit the Sahel region of the country.

Audu-Bida, the DG of the Agency highlighted in a presentation at the one-day consultative meeting titled “Potential Food Security and Nutrition Crises in the Sahel Region of Nigeria” that about seven States of Nigeria are at the risk of food insecurity and nutrition crises.

In the DG’s presentation certain predictions by some stakeholders on the issue of drought were highlighted. The case of NIMET rainfall predictions for 2010, WMOdrought predictions for sahel region,fewsnet  predictions, climate change challenges, desertification challenges were some of the cases which led to other consultations and meetings in collaboration with other major stakeholders to address the imminent food crisis.

NEMA set up a technical committee on the issue in March 2010 and a report was submitted in April 2010 and was circulated to stakeholders.

The meeting was attended by UNICEF, WMO, and Federal Ministries of Health, Science and Tech, Environment and Defence.
