BENIN—THE Minister of State for Works, Dr Chris Ogienmwonyi, weekend, faulted the award of Agbor-Ugo-Sakpoba 29 kilometers Federal Government road in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.
He described as unfair and unacceptable the asphalting of the 18 kilometers part of the road in Delta State as well as abandonment of the 11 kilometers section of it in Edo State.
Dr Ogienmwonyi, who faulted the manner the job was handled during an on-the-spot assessment of Benin-Abraka and Benin-Ore express roads, ordered the two Controllers of Works in both states to come up with a proposal that will assist the Federal Government to asphalt the Benin side of the road.
It would be recalled that the Benin community in the area chased the contractor handling the road out of the community and seized their equipment after they discovered that Delta part of the road was asphalted while their own side was only surfaced with concretes.
The contractor, Jeb-Gibson, explained to the minister that he was contracted to use asphalt on Delta side of the road and surface-dress the Benin part of it when the contract was awarded to him.
While he acknowledged the grievances of the Benin community in the area, he appealed to the Federal Government to complete the asphalting of the entire stretch of the road so that their lives would not be endangered.
Dr Ogienmwonyi, who appealed to the community members to be calm and allow the contractor go back to site, assured that work would commence soon after the paper work must have been completed.
