By Chinyere Amalu

ABUJA—The Federal Government has said it may take legal action against Senator Sani Yerima, if it had evidence that the former Zamfara State Governor married a 13-year-old girl.

Women Affairs and Social Development Minister, Iyom Josephine Anenih, who gave the hint in Abuja, though noted that the government had not commenced any serious investigations into the case and therefore challenged journalists, civil societies and the general public to come up with hard facts.

“Those making the allegations should come up with such facts as the name of the girl, and her date of birth, we have not known where the marriage was contracted and things like that,” the minister said, adding that if these facts were provided the Attorney-General could proceed to prosecute the senator. She stressed further, “ as representatives of government, we have to be sure of facts before taking action. Even if we go to court, and if we don’t have facts, we can’t make any head way.”

The minister said she was not sure that the senator could indulge in such relationship, but noted that if it was true, it was condemnable. “But if it is true, then it is very condemnable, obnoxious and it is something that we cannot allow to happen.”

She called on women to put hands on deck and defend their rights and that of the children, pointing out that if they didn’t, no one else would do it for them.

The minister said it was high time that children be respected in this country as they are the future of the country.
