Doctors in Imo threaten strike over kidnapped colleague

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI — Doctors in Imo State have threatened to down tools unless their kidnapped colleague, Dr. Polycarp Nwabueze, was released within two days by the kidnappers.

Imo State branch of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, warned that its members in public and private health facilities would embark on the warning strike to press home their demand.

Chairman, Imo State NMA, Dr. Jide Egwim, who read the riot act when he addressed journalists in Owerri,  yesterday, also opined that the action was to press home their protest against the kidnap of doctors in the state.

“Continued kidnap of doctors and other criminality against doctors will result in a situation where no medical or dental practitioner will be in good state to continue to render care,” Egwim said.

Egwin also warned that “henceforth, any further kidnap of a medical or dental practitioner will result in an indefinite withdrawal of clinical services by all medical and dental practitioners in the state.”

Describing the recent kidnap of Nwabueze as one kidnap too many, Egwim also recalled the ordeals of Dr. Anthony Ihedoro, Dr. Davidson Anyanwu and others, who were victims of the heinous crime.
