Detoxification

Detoxification is the process of removing toxins from the body. It is a widely used treatment and concept in alternative medicine which is fast gaining ground in Orthodox medical practice. Detoxification utilises a variety of techniques and is based on the principle that illnesses can be caused by the accumulation of toxic substances
(toxins) in the body. Eliminating existing toxins and avoiding new toxins are essential parts of the healing process.
Detoxification has been used for thousands of years and Fasting, a popularly used method of treatment, is one of the oldest therapeutic practices in Medicine. In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates (the father of Medicine), recommended fasting as a means to improve health. In ancient Indian Ayurvedic Medicine detoxification is used to treat several chronic illnesses and to prevent illness.
Medical research has identified that environmental factors may play a significant role in a variety of illnesses.

Environmental Medicine is a specialty that studies exactly how environmental factors influence disease. Health conditions such as Asthma, Cancer, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and several others are strongly influenced by exposure to toxic or allergenic substances in the environment. It is believed that over 80% of all illnesses have environmental and lifestyle causes. With people becoming more aware of environmental pollution, detoxification has become a prominent treatment in several medical practices. It is thought that roughly 25% of the population suffers from some level of heavy metal poisoning. Heavy metals such as Lead, Mercury, Arsenic and Cadmium are by-products of industrial processes. Synthetic agricultural chemicals, known to cause health problems, are found in food, water and the air. The Liver is the principle organ of detoxification assisted by the kidneys and intestines. Individual cells are detoxified via the lymph and circulatory systems. Toxins may be excreted from the body by the kidneys, intestines, skin and lungs. Detoxification treatments become necessary when the body’s natural detoxification capacity becomes overwhelmed. This can be caused by the long-term effects of improper diet, overeating, stress, illness, lack of excercise and poor health habits in general. When a build-up of toxic substances in the body causes illness, the condition is known as Toxaemia. Years of overeating and diets high in fat and processed foods and low in fibre lead to digestive problems. Food does not pass through the digestive tract efficiently and as a result is not digested properly nor eliminated from the bowel. In this constipated state, food can rot in the bowel and produce toxic by-products. This state is known as Intestinal Toxaemia or Toxic colon Syndrome.

The Colon, Lungs, Kidneys and Liver filter toxins from the bloodstream while the lymphatic system takes care of toxins such as bacteria and traces of chemicals found in pollutants. To keep the systems of the body running efficiently, it is advisable to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. This should be increased if you are above average in weight and if you exercise or drink coffee and tea. Staying well hydrated helps all organ systems of the body function properly. Too much water is dangerous as it can dilute electrolytes and essential minerals in the body.

There are preparations and supplements available to detoxify the body.
