BENIN CITY – THREE mobile policemen were feared dead, while three of their vehicles were burnt down when they were attacked by dare devil armed robbers along the Benin-Lagos road at the early hours of today.
Vanguard learnt that the robbers laid siege on the road between the Ogbemudia farm and Okada and took the policemen at the check point unawares.
An eye witness account told Vanguard that the policemen ran into the bush after the robbers who were operating with sophisticated weapons opened fire on them.
It was learnt that the robbers apparently decided to burn down the vehicles when the policemen who ran into the bush engaged them in a gun duel.
The incident Vanguard learnt stalled movement of vehicles for several hours and that eventually led to the delay in the arrival of most newspapers to Benin and other South South states.
When Vanguard contacted the police spokesman in the state, ASP Peter Ogboi, at about 4pm,to confirm the death of any officer in the attack, he explained that he was in a seminar and that he will get in touch later after he must have gotten details of the incident.
But after that conversation, Ogboi could not pick all the calls put through to his phone.
