KADUNA — Civil rights activist, Mallam Shehu Sani, yesterday challenged the Federal Government on the trial of the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, Mallam Nasir el-Rufal, for alleged corruption, saying it would be a test case for the anti-graft crusade embarked upon by the administration of Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.
Sani who is President of the Civil Rights Congress, CRC, made his position known in a statement in Kaduna, pointing out the ongoing war against corruption by the current administration would be a charade if the government attempted to shield El-Rufai who returned to the country last week from self-exile from prosecution.
According to Sani, it would be immoral for the government to take any step that could be misconstrued by Nigerians as attempt to protect the former FCT minister from facing trial for alleged crimes committed while serving as minister under the Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
According to him, “ex-FCT minister, El-Rufai must stand trial for the EFCC charges against him. The crusade against corruption by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan will simply become a charade if El-Rufai is shielded or issues awaiting him are manipulated.
“El-Rufai’s arrogance and disguised political posturing must not divert the attention of the EFCC.”
