After helping Nigeria beat the Republic of Benin in the opening match of the first WAFU Cup of Nations in Abeokuta, Friday, top striker, Ahmed Musa, said the Eagles could win the tournament.
Reflecting on the first victory by the Nigerian team, Musa who is the captain said that he was excited at the victory because it had wiped away the sorrows of their inability to qualify for the African Nations Championship.
“We are hoping to win this tournament. We want Nigerians to give us the necessary support so that we emerge the first champions of this competition,†he said.
The player who is among the top scorers in the Globacom Premier League attributed their inability to score in the first half to hard luck. “You could see that we were playing well but the goals just refused to come but thank God we pressed harder in the second half and the goals began to come.â€
He singled out Ghana and Senegal as the likely teams that could give the Eagles problems, but insisted that “should our paths cross, then we would see who the better side is.â€
He again apologized for the team’s failure to beat Niger and prayed that they use the on-going WAFU tournament to make amends.
