Tough day for patrons not name Olajuwon or Ewing at the former Fruitland Nursery, which seemed in danger of becoming a freak show just as Tiger Woods set out on a windy afternoon.
Galleries line every hole Tiger Woods plays at least six deep and so far they are being treated to solid, if not spectacular golf from the world No. 1. He’s 2 under through four holes, solid off the tee going 3-for-3 in fairways hit and closing on his first sub-70 opening round in 16 trips down Magnolia Lane.
Predictably, it is Woods’ short game that figured to be the last one to show. Swing coach Hank Haney has spent the last few weeks working hard with his lone pupil both at Isleworth and Augusta National and the full swing seems grooved. But there is no substitute for reps and a player’s touch is usually the last piece of the puzzle.
So far, that puzzle is looking closer to a finished product than many would have thought.
