The Enugu East Zone of the Conference of Speakers wants the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Maurice Iwu, retained at the expiration of his tenure in June.
In a joint statement, the speakers of Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Imo and Abia states, expressed confidence in the leadership of the INEC boss and condemned calls for his removal.
The speakers, who paid a solidarity visit to the INEC chairman, said “it would be pedestrian to place the problems of elections in Nigeria on Professor Maurice Iwu alone,†adding that rather than collectively looking at the problems of the electoral sector, Iwu was being singled out and “slaughtered on the altar of minority rascalityâ€.
Iwu, responding, said he treasured the visit of the speakers because even though he was a Nigerian, he also had a home base which appreciated his efforts at nurturing and consolidating Nigeria’s democracy.
