PPA rejects constitution amendment by Senate

OWERRI—The Progressive Peoples’ Alliance, PPA,  has said that  the on-going constitution review by Senate is self serving.

“The first amendment should start by eliminating voice voting, which only the Senate President can authenticate. Voice voting is no longer tenable in democracies all over the world.

“The Senate President should understand that he is not in the Supreme Military Council. He should remember that all of them are supposed to have been voted in by the people of Nigeria,” PPA said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Ben Onyechere.

“We remember when the Senate President said telephone was not for the poor and I can tell categorically that David Mark is only there to protect the establishment instead of the popular wishes of Nigerians as he has proved in the past,” the statement said.

“The hurried amendment of the issue of defection is selfish and self serving, as it is immoral and undemocratic to say that Nigerian should tolerate arrant defection with the peoples’ mandate. It is a slap on our democracy and on the aspirations of Nigerians. We thank God that people like Jubril Aminu are there to puncture some of these anti people decisions by Senator Mark.”

“The hope of Nigerians will now depend on what the House of Representatives will on its’ own decide on the issues on defection with the peoples’ mandate. Nobody  can categorically say what the National Assembly has been doing with the huge sums of money allocated to them as constituency allowances.

“We therefore urge the EFCC to investigate  members of the National Assembly, who have been busy acquiring houses and vehicles both at home and abroad and leaving the people, who they claim have voted for them to suffer more than ever before in the history of this country,” the statement added.
