THE Oyo State Police Command has dismissed a policeman, Mr. Fakere Adegboyega for allegedly torturing a suspect, Monsuru Akanji to death in Agodi Police Station.
While speaking with newsmen Wednesday, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Baba Adisa Bolanta also said the suspect would be formally arraigned in court to prove to the public that the command would not cover any unprofessional act by any member of the command.
According to him, Mr. Adegboyega who had spent 20 years in the Police Force compounded his case after the suspect arrested for theft of a laptop died and the policeman absconded for about three weeks before he resurfaced again.
He explained that the command on the 30 March, 2010 learnt of the sudden death of Monsuru after he was detained by the policeman.
Bolanta vowed that his command would not shield any policeman that endangered the lives of citizens they should protect.
He added that on hearing about the mystery that surrounded Monsuru’s death and the complaints that he did not die a natural death, he ordered the homicide section of the command to investigate the issue and that autopsy be carried out to determine the actual death of the detained suspect.
Continuing, he added that the reports of the autopsy and the investigation carried out revealed that Monsuru died through torture.
Reacting to the allegation, the erring policeman explained that the 27-year-old was not tortured by him but died as a result of the mob attack after his arrest.
On the allegations that he refused the daddy of the deceased to give him water and food, he denied saying he actually allowed the man to feed him.
He has since been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department where he would be detained until his arraignment.
The CP stressed that the parade of the officer took that long so that the command would carry out a comprehensive investigation.
