AWKAâ€” GOVERNORÂ Peter Obi has granted amnesty to 15 convicts to mark this yearâ€™s Easter celebration. The convicts were serving terms in Awka, Onitsha, Ibite-Olo and Oji River Prisons.
A statement by the State AttorneyÂ General and Commissioner for Justice and Chairman of State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Mr. Emmanuel Chukwuma said the Governorâ€™s action was in accordance with the powers conferred on him by Section 212 of the 1999 constitution.
According to the statement, the beneficiaries from Awka Prison are Elochukwu Onwuka, Osita Ossai, Onyedika Chukwumuanya, Ebuka Okonkwo and Victor Godfrey. Also, eight persons, who were freed from Onitsha Prison are Ndubisi Ebelionwu, Abuchi Chesdom, Abuchi Nwafor, Aleke Izuchukwu,Â Ebuka Okeke, Charles Okonkwo and Benjamin Nwadiobima.
Convicts released from Ibiteâ€“Olo and Oji-River Prisons (under Enugu Prison Command) are Izuchukwu Elemuo and Obiora Okafor, respectively.
