Heartland midfielder Ikechukwu Ibenegbu is hoping that his ability to deliver quality set-pieces will earn him a spot in Nigeria’s World Cup squad in June.
Since Austin Okocha’s retirement from the national team, the Super Eagles have struggled to find a player with quality deliveries. But Ibenegbu, who is Heartland’s designated free-kick taker, showed quality during the WAFU Cup tournament.
Three of his deliveries led to goals against Guinea and Benin Republic, and also the opening goal in the Final against Senegal, and he told KickOffNigeria.com that it was a combination of natural talent and practice.
“It is a natural talent that God has given me,†Ibenegbu told KickOffNigeria.com. “But I try to work hard during training to practise it so that I can be better.â€
Ibenegbu, who also scored twice during the competition, count in his favour when Lars Lagerback is making up his mind on his final 23.
