Imo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has apprehended 309 motorists for flagrantly flouting traffic rules this year.
The Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr. Angus Obum Ibezim, made this known while interacting with news men in his office.
According to the Sector Commander, the recalcitrant motorists were apprehended during the Commission’s routine check, tagged ‘operation eagle eye’.
“The concept of the operation was to ensure the enforcement of traffic rules and regulations with a view to drastically minimizing road traffic crashes in the stateâ€, Ibezim said.
The Sector Commander stated that the exercise was centred on forged vehicle papers, fake and wrong use of vehicle number plates for different categories of vehicles.
“Another area was the use of fake, forged and invalid drivers’ licence. The violation of traffic laws as regards number plates and driving without valid drivers’ licence, has grave implications on the security and safety of the people, as well as the Road Safety Corpsâ€, Ibezim said.
He decried the attitude of some government officials, who use official number plates on their private cars, adding that the Commission will not tolerate it as any offender will be made to face the full weight of the law.
Vanguard recalls that a breakdown of the figures of the offenders show that 104 were apprehended for improper use of vehicle number plates, 63 for seat belt violation, 58 for not having light and caution sign, while 46 were contravened for not producing fire extinguisher on demand.
