Former NSE boss to launch foundation to promote economic development

The former Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Apostle Hayford Alile, is set to launch a foundation that will help project his ideas of reinventing Nigeria and promote economic development.

Speaking at a forum in Lagos, heralding the launch of a book, tittled ‘In the Hand of God’ — a biography of Alile and in commemoration of his 70th birthday, Dr. Joseph Mba, Chairman, Organising Committee of the forthcoming event, stated that the foundation is part of Alile’s plan to give back to the society and his contribution to the development of the country in general.

Mba, who is also a co-writer of the biography noted that the production of the book becomes necessary following Alile’s exemplary lifestyle and noteworthy leadership skills which has endeared him to the hearts of majority who has come in contact with him in his sojourn in the corporate, religious and societal circle.

He noted that the book launch which will take place, April 30, 2010, at the Nigerian Institute of International Affair (NIIA), Lagos, will feature Dr. Joseph Sanusi, former Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, who is expected to deliver a keynote address, while Dr. Bayo Kuku will be the Chairman of the occasion among others.

Speaking in the same vein, Mrs. Folusho Olaniyan, Secretary of the Committee and Managing Director, UTC Plc, stated that the foundation, called Hayford Alile Foundation, is already registered in Geneva, Switzerland, because of the international profile of Alile and also because of its strategic plan to partner with international organisations so as to get the much needed financing to undertake its project in Nigeria.

She stated that proceeds from the book launch will be transferred to the foundation. The foundation, according to her, will help address a number of societal issues and challenges confronting a vast majority of the less privileged across the country.

Apostle Hayford Alile was born April 24, 1940. After his secondary education at Loyola College, Ibadan, he attended briefly, the University of Ibadan as Scholar in Physics and thereafter proceeded to Howard University, Washington DC, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Mathematics.

He later attended Rutgers Graduate School of Management, New Jersey, USA for his MBA and the Harvard Business School for AMP.

His rich working history began as an Economic and Financial Consultant to Louis Berger Inc. East Orange, New Jersey, USA in 1968. Between 1969 and 1972, he served as Assistant Director, Rutgers University Entrepreneurial Development Centre, New Jersey and Rutgers Minority Investment Co. Inc. He worked as an Investment Adviser/Broker with Investors Diversified Services Inc, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, 1972_1973. In 1973, he returned to Nigeria to head the Management Consulting Department of the Centre for Management Development, Lagos and was from there appointed the Director_General and Chief Executive of The Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1976.

Apostle Alile, who is the immediate past Director_General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, is also a board member at the Central Bank of Nigeria, having served at Unilever Nigeria, UAC Nigeria as the Chairman of the Board in different capacity.

At the moment, Hayford sits on several boards of corporations either as chairman or as director to offer out of the wealth of his management experience. To mention a few, he is chairman of the boards of Oceanic Bank (International) Plc; Unilever (Nigeria) Plc; UTC (Nigeria.) Plc; Strategic Business School and Afrinvest (West Africa) Plc.

He is also a director of IGI Ltd (Industrial and General Insurance), Bendel Feed and Flour Ltd, Ivie Securities Ltd and a host of others. He is also a leading international investment analyst who has, in the past 35 years, made valuable contributions to national economic growth and public policy formulation.
