PORT HARCOURT—The Federal Government has again been urged to implement recommendations of the Niger Delta Technical Committee as an enduring solution to challenges in the Niger Delta.
Making this appeal at the first Port Harcourt International Oil and Gas Conference/Exhibition in Port Harcourt, Prof Okechukwu Ibeanu, who spoke on The Niger Delta and the paradox of development: Resolving the conflicts between corporate organization and host communities, said developments in the region must amount to deployment of oil resource in a way that will make the owners take control of their environment and lives.
According to him, the reward system should be equitable both in objective and subjective sense.
Prof. Ibeanu said the government should not conclude that the amnesty programme was the solution to challenges in the region.
He described the region’s problem as complex with multi-strands and layers, saying “we run the risk of assuming that the problem of the Niger Delta is simply that of militancy, however, serious that problem must be.”
