The upward trend in the Nigerian capital market continued last week, as investors recorded N69.8 billion improvement on their investments on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
The market capitalisation and All-share index, representing value of listed equities, both appreciated by 1.04 per cent. The capitalisation which opened the week at N6.699 trillion closed at N6.769 trillion while the index garnered 288.6 basis points to close at 27.988.71 points from 27,700.11 points.
Total Nigeria Plc led 63 other stocks on the price gainersâ€™ table, with a gain of N42.00 to close at N194.15 per share, Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc followed with a gain of N32.77 to close at N151.44 per share and Oando Plc garnered N20.51 to close at N120.51 per share.
Other share price gainers include: Guinness Nigeria Plc N14.87, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc N9.49, African Petroleum Plc N8.02, Nestle Nigeria Plc N5.90, Seven-Up Bottling Company Plc N5.57, Conoil Plc N4.51, Northern Nigeria Flour Mills Plc N3.82 among others.
On the contrary, Zenith Bank Plc led 52 other stocks on the price losers table, dropping by N3.55 to close at N15.45 per share, Ashaka Cement Plc followed with a loss of N3.29 to close at N22.82 per share and Unilever Nigeria Plc dipped by N2.44 to close at N26.00 per share.
Other share price losers include: Beta Glass Company Plc N2.03, Cement Company of Northern Nigeria Plc N1.59, Flour Mills Nigeria Plc N1.50, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated N0.97, Alumaco Plc N0.92, First Bank of Nigeria Plc N0.90, National Salt Company of Nigeria Plc – N0.79 among others.
Equity trading appreciated by 42.7 per cent, as a turnover of 3.71 billion shares valued at N25.73 billion was recorded in 61,124 deals, in contrast to the previous weekâ€™s turnover of 2.6 billion shares valued at N22.11 billion in 41,119 deals.
The Insurance sub-sector recorded the highest patronage in the sectorial analysis, accounting for 32.61 per cent of the market turnover, with 1.21 billion shares valued at N1.12 billion in 10,205 deals.
AIICO Insurance Plc enjoyed the most patronage in the sub-sector, trading 214.15 million shares valued at N349.66 million in 5,884 deals, Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc followed with th exchange of 146.02 million shares valued at N86.5 million in 374 deals and Lasaco Assurance Plc recorded 129.39 million shares valued at N75.56 million in 519 deals.
The Banking sub-sector followed on the sectorial analysis, accounting for 28.03 per cent of the market turnover, with 1.04 billion shares valued at N11.72 billion in 22,230 deals. Zenith Bank Plc emerged the most active in the sub-sector, trading 173.07 million shares valued at N3.12 billion in 2,271 deals, United Bank for Africa Plc followed with the exchange of 117.37 million shares valued at N1.97 billion in 1,680 deals and First Bank of Nigeria Plc recorded 111.16 million shares valued at N1.84 billion in 4,816 deals.
