Athletics coach, Paul Obodoechina, has advised top Nigerian athletes staying away from the AFN golden league to return and compete in order for them to achieve their peak performance.
Athletes such as Obinna Metu, Godday James have stayed away from all the decided legs of the league as according to them, they would only compete at the Mobil Championships, which will be the selection competition for the Commonwealth Games October in India.
But coach Obodoechina who is with the Youth Olympic team in Oghara, Delta State, told the athletes that staying away will hurt them in the long run.
“The best form of training is competition, because the more you run the better you become.
“There is no use staying back, waiting for the big meet. If that is the case, the athlete concerned will find it hard reaching peak performance.â€
He added that the AFN is doing its best to put the athletes in a competitive mood before the commonwealth Games and therefore all serious athletes should take advantage to get themselves ready for the Mobil Championships.
The AFN golden league enters its third leg on May 1 in Lagos, with three athletes Ogho-Oghene Ewgero, Jospehine Omenka and Margaret Etim remaining in contention for the N1m jackpot prize. This is apart from the N20, 000, N15, 000 and N10, 000, which first three finishers earn in all each race of in the golden league.
