PORT HARCOURT— NEW Minister of Niger Delta, Elder Godsday Orubebe, has been told to decentralize the operations of the ministry. Hailing the appointment of the minister, a former militant leader, Sobomabo Jackreec, a.k.a Egberipapa, said the situation where activities of the ministry were concentrated only in its Abuja office was very unhealthy.
According to him, the state offices of the ministry should be encouraged to function. He said in the past when he and several others went to some of the state offices of the ministry to draw attention to serious issues in the region, they met structures that could not really do anything. He appealed to the new minister of the region to ensure that the various state offices of the ministry were strengthened to also handle issues.
The former militant leader also urged the new minister and Federal Government to see that repentant militants in the region were speedily engaged in productive ventures. This would be possible when, according to him, the post amnesty process is fast- tracked.
Expressing worries over the delay in commencing rehabilitation programme for ex-militant youths, Egberipapa said there was urgent need to keep the youths busy.
According to him, when they are productively engaged, it would save them the temptation of indulging in acts against public interest.
